Admission Requirements for the M.S. in Human Ecology: Consumer Behavior and Family Economics(CBFE)


I. GPA: A minimum undergraduate Grade Point Average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. In exceptional circumstances students with a lower GPA may be admitted on probation.

II. Letters of Recommendation: The letters of recommendation must strongly support the applicant's interest in and promise for successful completion of a Masters in CBFE. At least two of these letters must be from persons familiar with the applicant's academic work and address how the applicant's academic work indicates promise in this graduate program.

III. Applicant's Statement: The statement must address why the applicant is interested in work in this area and at the University of Wisconsin. The statement should include intended area of concentration and/or thesis topic. If applicant expects subsequently to apply for the Ph.D. program, the statement should address this.

IV. Prior academic work: There is no single undergraduate major that is expected of applicants to the Consumer Science graduate program. However, to prepare the student for graduate work applicants should have successfully completed at least one college-level course in microeconomics, statistics, and calculus. Students who fail to meet the minimum course requirements for admission may be admitted with deficiencies.

V. Other experience: nonacademic work (paid, volunteer, travel) should be described and, if the case, linked to the applicants area of intended specialization

VI. Official GRE scores: We require verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. GMATs are not accepted in place of GRE scores. VII. Minimum acceptable TOEFL scores are set by the Graduate School.
