Student Organizations

Consumer Science students have a number of organizations in which they can participate:

Consumer Science Student Association /
Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals (CSSA/SOCAP)

The Consumer Science Student Association is a student run group unified to help Consumer Science students best utilize their tools and understand their major. Our main interest is helping undergraduate students understand the value of their major in context with a number of professional interests. Additionally, the group serves as a network opportunity for students and consumer professionals. The CSSA is a student chapter of the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals (SOCAP), an international association focusing on consumer protection. CSSA uses a number of ways to help Consumer Science students further understand their major. We invite university faculty and Consumer Affairs professionals to campus to present to our members about various topics relevant to the Consumer Science major. Also, CSSA travels to Midwestern area businesses that employ Consumer Affairs professionals in an effort to gain insight into our field of study. These speakers and trips are meant to help Consumer Science students understand and prepare for the opportunities they have after graduation. Another goal of CSSA is to help Consumer Science students get to know others in their major by holding socials. Through speakers, trips, and socials CSSA will help students feel more comfortable with their major and more prepared for graduation. Applications to join CSSA are available on-line or on the CSSA box in room 345 of Human Ecology. Applications and check payable to CSSA can be turned in to the CSSA / SOCAP mailbox in Room 345 SoHE, or to CSSA’s treasurer.

The Wisconsin Association for Family and Consumer Sciences is the state arm of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), one of the oldest professional societies in the United States. Founded in 1909, its purpose is to improve the quality and standards of individual and family life through programs that educate, influence public policy, disseminate information and publish research findings. The student chapter echoes these themes in preparing students to enter the retail field.
