BIG CHANGES AFOOT! Construction on the Human Ecology Building addition/renovation begins in January 2010
Please note: Our hours are variable! During this transition period, please check the exhibits page for gallery hours. Hours for each exhibition will vary--particularly after this fall, when we begin to present shows in alternative venues.
Through fall 2009, the Design Gallery is still open in Room 70 on the ground floor of the Human Ecology Building, on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus between Van Hise Hall and Agricultural Hall. The street address is 1300 Linden Drive. On the campus map, search for 'Design Gallery': http://www.map.wisc.edu/ Starting in 2010, the Design Gallery will maintain a presence in alternative spaces throughout the UW campus and the city. “Stitched Ground: Artists Embroider the Land,” an exhibition curated by Design Gallery director Jody Clowes, will be on view at the Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters from February through April, 2010. Our annual juried student show will be integrated into the Department of Design Studies’s fashion show at Monona Terrace in early May. Stay tuned to find out where we’ll be next!
For access to our current location, you can find bus routes and parking lots on the campus map: http://www.map.wisc.edu/ Search for 'Design Gallery,' and then mouse over the map to reveal pop-up windows for nearby bus routes and parking lots. Be aware that construction on University Avenue this summer is creating major traffic delays and detours. The free campus buses (routes 80, 81, and 85) stop very close to the Human Ecology Building. On weekends and after 4:30 on weekdays, you can park for free in Lots 20 and 36. (Lot 20 is on University Avenue between Charter and Randall Sts. Lot 36 is adjacent to Steenbock Library.) Currently Lot 26 (parking spaces along Observatory Drive) is not available due to construction. If you're not sure how to get here on foot from any of these lots, check the campus map or call 262-8815 during gallery hours for walking directions. Parking is much more limited before 4:30 on weekdays. You can find metered parking on the upper deck of Lot 36, in Lot 1 at the Memorial Union, and at the Lake Street ramp near Library Mall. All of the free campus buses stop at the Memorial Union. From the Lake Street ramp, you can pick up the 85 at Lake and State Sts. There is one handicapped parking spot available outside the Human Ecology Building. Pull up in front of the building (where the signs say "No Parking Entire Drive") and drive to the east side of the building, then turn left into the parking spot. The Design Gallery is on the west end of the building; you may wish to drop off passengers in front of the west entrance before you reach the handicapped parking area.
