Helen Cramer spent the first seventeen years of her twenty-six-year career at UW as a professor of home management. Her position involved living in the Home Management House and supervising the groups of students who took turns living there as part of the course HE112. From 1966 until her retirement in 1975, she served as Assistant to the Associate Dean of the School. Her responsibilities in this position included admissions, department publications and bulletins, registration, and the Scholarship Committee.

She earned her BS in Home Economics Education from the University of Missouri in 1932 and an MA in Home Management, Child Development and Family Life from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1943. Before her appointment at UW in 1949, she taught home economics and home management at several vocational high schools in Missouri, Iowa State College, and Mississippi State College for Women.
