Bea Petrich earned a BS in Home Economics Education from the University of Minnesota in 1947. She taught at several high schools in Minnesota before completing an MS in Vocational Education at Colorado State University in 1958. For two years she held a position as professor of Home Economics Education at Stout State University, and then for five years she was professor at Northern Illinois University. Petrich then returned to school and earned a PhD in Home Economics Education from Iowa State University in 1965. From 1971 until her retirement in 1991, she had a joint appointment in the School of Family Resources and Consumer Sciences and the School of Education at UW.

Her service to the university included chairing the Home Economics Education and Extension program area and playing an integral role in the development of the Continuing and Vocational Education Department. Petrich also took an interest in the history of home economics. Although she was unable to complete the book on the history of home economics at UW that she had planned to write, Petrich wrote a draft version entitled "Home Economics at University of Wisconsin-Madison to 1939."

Her research and teaching interests included computer applications in vocational education, vocational education for the handicapped, and the evaluation of home economics programs.
