Ronald Stampfl earned
a BBA (1966) and MBA (1967) in Marketing from UW-Milwaukee and
a PhD (1972) in Marketing from UW-Madison, with minors in Applied
Economics, Social Psychology and Organization Theory. In 1970,
he became an instructor in the UW's School of Business. This same
year, he was named outstanding teacher of the year by students
in the Business School because of his innovative teaching style,
which included unusual practices such as handing out the final
exam on the first day of a marketing class so that students could
work on it throughout the semester.
In 1972 Stampfl was
appointed jointly to the School of Family Resources and Consumer
Sciences and to the School of Business. In FRCS, he initially
taught in the Clothing and Textiles
Department, with a particular focus on clothing and textiles
retailing. As chair of the Consumer Studies Committee and the
Consumer Science Institute Steering Committee, he made important
contributions to the development of the Consumer Science major,
and from February 1974 until January 1975 he was coordinator of
the Consumer Science program area.
In order to further his work in retailing, Stampfl switched from
Consumer Science back to Environment,
Textiles and Design in 1985, where he directed the retailing
major and in that capacity established and coordinated a national
retailing internship placement program. Between 1984 and 1988,
he administered the Center for Retailing Studies, a program of
FRCS and the School of Business.
In 1988, Stampfl left
the UW to accept a position at San Diego State University.
