Manfred Wentz earned
a degree at the College of Textile Chemistry and Engineering in
Hohenstein, Germany before coming to the United States in 1966.
He studied part-time at the University of Maryland from 1966 to
1969 and then earned a PhD in Fiber and Polymer Science from North
Carolina State University in 1973. His professional background
includes several appointments at various companies and research
institutes in Germany and the United States. Between his PhD and
his appointment at UW, he was Director of Research at the International
Fabricare Institute in Silver Spring, Maryland.
In 1974, Wentz accepted
an appointment to the Environment,
Textiles and Design program area. He also served as program
coordinator from 1980 until 1985. At UW he taught undergraduate
and graduate courses in textile chemistry, textile analysis, and
fiber and polymer science and conducted research on issues relating
to laundering and dry-cleaning. In 1982 he was awarded a Faculty
Professional Excellence Award.
After leaving UW in
1985, Wentz served as chair and professor of Textile Science at
the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and then as a corporate
vice president of R.R. Street & Co., Inc. He is now president
of TextileCare International (TCI) Ltd., Executive Director of
the International Drycleaners Congress (IDC) and a Visiting Professor
at the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University
in Raleigh, NC. His current research focuses on the development
and assessment of alternative textile cleaning processes and their
impact on the environment.
