Research Interests

My research focuses on the 1890-1920 period, specifically the American Beaux-Arts style. I’m interested in identifying modern and historic motifs selected by Beaux Arts designers and interpreting their intended meaning. Research methodologies include a material culture approach and formal stylistic analysis. I plan to teach the history of interiors at the university level and continue consulting on significant historic restorations.  I came to the UW-Madison because it is a leading university in the study of material culture, history of interiors, and the decorative arts.  Professors that I am currently working with include Dr. Virginia Terry Boyd, former Graduate Chair Roberto Rengel, and Dr. Suzanne Scott.

The Wisconsin State Historical society presented the Yawkey House Museum in Wausau,Wisconsin with the prestigious 2009 Wisconsin Historic Preservation Award. Only one historic preservation project receives this recognition each year. I held the contract for the interior design on the project and was awarded ASID's Gold Award (first place) in Historic Restoration, in the nationally judged competition. My work was publically recognized at the the official presentation ceremony held on August 17, 2009 in Wausau, by both the Wisconsin State Historical Society and the Marathon County Historical Society. It was a multi-million dollar restoration. Further information is below.

Yawkey House Receives Award The Yawkey House Museum went through an extensive restoration and re-opened to the public in May of 2008. Now the Yawkey House Museum in Wausau is being honored. The museum is receiving the 2009 Wisconsin Historic Preservation Award. The award is given yearly to recognize the best work in protecting a threatened historic property in Wisconsin. In addition to the 2009 Wisconsin Historic Preservation Award, the project received a Gold award from the American Society of Interior Designers for Diane Al Shihabi's work on the interior restoration. A Silver award from the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association was awarded to Landscape Designer Susan Murphy. Kristine Johnson, Curator of Events for the Marathon County Historical Society, said that despite our current economic status the museum has seen a lot of visitors."We have people not only that live in Wausau and Marathon County but we receive a lot of out of state people and its great to see Wausau is attracting a lot of tourists." She continued, "I think rather than just a place with old things, it has old things that represent the family, might not be the exact things that were in the house but they are indicative to the period."The house was built in 1900 and was gifted to the Marathon County Historical Society in 1950. The house gives visitors not only a chance to see historic artifacts but allow them to get an idea what it was like to live in a different era."
