T – Th 8:50 – 11:20
1 – 3 credits Can be taken concurrently with Senior Thesis DS 691
This Seminar is an opportunity for advanced level Textile and Apparel Design students to produce a body of work based on their own theme and technical area of interest. Students in the class will develop projects that allow them to go deeper into concept and familiar techniques to create a cohesive group of unique works. Seminar classes will consist of researching relevant practicing artists, professional practices, group critiques, guest lectures and critics, as well as open studio work time. This course is open to upper level undergraduates in the Design Studies program. Students in this seminar may work in any technique that they have already studied (dye, weave, print, embellish, garment, etc.) but should be self-motivated and have strong time management skills.

New Course Announcement:
Culture and Environment DS 501 Section 7
Instructor: Jung-hye Shin
T - Th 11:00- 12:15
Open only to junior, senior, and graduate students
This seminar will explore the idea of culture as embodied in buildings, drawing on materials from the United States, South America, the Middle East, and East Asia.
Buildings shape our everyday life and we shape our buildings. This conversational quality of the relationship between buildings and people makes it possible for us to understand the culture and society in which particular buildings are built. This course will focus on analyzing and reading cultural values embedded in places through understanding: (1) physical configurations, (2) social organization, and (3) practiced/symbolic/representational aspects of buildings. Through this learning process, students will develop skills and methods to analyze and learn from building designs, and ultimately understand the building process, i.e., how the built environment shapes and is shaped by people as a group.

‘Movin’ On Up Exhibit’ in Design Gallery: Sept. 8 – Nov. 20
The Design Gallery will feature Movin’ On Up, an exhibition describing the School of Human Ecology building project. It will run from Sept. 8 through Nov. 20. It will also highlight historic photos of the School’s early years and present a brief overview of past Design Gallery exhibitions. In addition, a significant portion of the gallery will be set aside for class critiques, portfolio reviews, and temporary installations of student work, to be reserved on a rotating basis.
New Hours: Weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; closed weekends. With extended open hours, it’s hoped that this exhibition will become an informal gathering place where the Human Ecology community can celebrate and anticipate the exciting changes to come, and the public can readily visualize our future.
During the construction and renovation period, the Design Gallery will maintain a presence in alternative spaces throughout the UW campus and the city.
