Post-Baccalaureate Teaching Certification (Non-UW Madison Options)
Focus
Provide students the skills and experiences necessary to become certified in education (able to be hired as a public school teacher in Wisconsin).
Certification
Students with a Bachelor’s degree apply directly to a Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification program. Training typically includes coursework in education issues, practices, educational foundations, teaching methods, and field placements.
Depending on the specific program or area of study one is working toward, certification can take as little as 1 year or as many as 3. The length of time it takes to complete the program may depend primarily on the student’s academic background, certification major selected, full vs. part-time status, and the student’s relevant teaching experience. Some programs offer just the certification, while others are also Master’s Degree programs.
Programs
There are many programs that offer this certification. Some examples of these programs include Edgewood College, UW-Milwaukee, and Cardinal Stritch University. See the websites below for more information on each of these programs.
Requirements
Most programs require students to pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in all three areas (reading, writing, mathematics). Students must apply to each program individually, and adhere to the specific requirements of that program. Contact the program of interest in order to obtain further details and specific requirements, as these programs differ from college to college.
