Biography
Lori L. Bakken joined the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies in the School of Human Ecology in July, 2010. This is a new, joint appointment with Wisconsin Extension, focused on promoting evaluation and program planning throughout the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Bakken has been a faculty member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 2002, previously in the School of Medicine and Public Health. She is also an Affiliate Associate Professor in the School of Education.
Dr. Bakken’s research focuses on determining key variables that influence learning and successful career development of clinical research scientists. As part of a federally-funded project, she developed an inventory to assess clinical research self-efficacy that is being used across the nation by leading academic medical centers and she has published numerous manuscripts in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals.
She also has served as a member and Secretary/Treasurer of the Board of Directors for the Association of Clinical Research Training and was a member of the national Evaluation Liaisons Committee for the NIH K12 Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development training awards.

Research Interests
My goal is to be recognized as a leading scholar in the career development and education of health and biomedical researchers. Hence, my research uses Social Cognitive Career Theory as a conceptual framework to understand learning processes and barriers to career development in diverse populations of scientists. I’m primarily interested in women and racial minorities who are underrepresented in academic positions within the United States. Consequently, my leadership and service activities, grant awards, and publications are typically interrelated in ways that enrich my professional goals.
