Family and Consumer Teaching Licensure
Students may work toward a Wisconsin 210 license to teach secondary family and consumer education through the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies by either completing an initial B.S. degree in Family, Consumer, and Community Education or taking certification courses after they have already earned a baccalaureate degree in a related field such as family studies, child development, consumer science, nutrition, design studies, or psychology. This teacher certification is made possible through collaborative arrangements with the UW-Madison School of Education.
Persons who have a baccalaureate degree and wish to obtain the license to teach Family and Consumer Education may send a copy of their transcript(s) for analysis to determine additional coursework that would be needed. Many certification courses are offered online and can be completed without coming to campus. Family and staff are also able to arrange field experiences and/or occupational internships that can be used to accumulate accelerated work experience hours required for secondary vocational license endorsements. These endorsements (e.g., licenses 211, 213, 215) qualify individuals to teach advanced level occupational courses in grades 9-12 in such areas as child services, food services, and family and consumer services.
