ROOM 38 COMPUTER LAB

The School of Human Ecology has a computer lab with 16 student workstations, 1 teacher workstations, and working areas for up to 10 laptops. The computers in the lab contain the software necessary for many of the courses taught in the school. While the room is available for SoHE students to work on the computers, the room is also a classroom. If a class is being held in the lab, only students in that class are allowed in the room.

For further infomation about Working the SoHE lab, click here.

If there are problems with the lab, contact the DoIT Help Desk (4-HELP) and report the problem as detailed above. You may also email classtech@mail.sohe.wisc.edu if the problem prevents the lab from being used for teaching.

Students are required to take their files with them when they leave the lab. Files may be deleted from the hard disk of any computer in the lab without warning.  Zips are no longer supported in the lab. Students should use USB flash drives, portable USB hard disks, burnable CDs or burnable DVD disks. USB extension cables have been attached to all lab computers to make using USB devices easier.

The lab computers have access to the h: drive. This drive allows all students to use files placed on the server by the faculty. To place a file on the h: drive from your office, go to the S: drive on your office computer and go into the lab folder. This is what the students see as the h: drive. Create a folder with your class name on it and place your files inside of that folder. Folders will be deleted after each semester, so you should make sure that you have a backup copy of all files saved in the lab folder.

The lab should be closed and the lights turned out when the last person in the lab leaves.

Food and drinks are not allowed in the lab at any time.

If you are teaching in the lab, and there is a problem that will affect your class, you can call the Academic technology pager at 657-2041. After the beep enter the number where you can be reached or the room number you are in (38) and press the # key. If you hear a repeated beeping, the page has been sent. If it is between 8AM and 5PM someone should be there shortly.
