Prospective Graduate Students

The School offers a M.S., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Human Ecology with three graduate programs:

Human Development and Family Studies
Consumer Behavior and Family Economics
Design Studies

Each option offers a challenging array of course work along with exciting opportunities for research, outreach, and service consistent with their scholarly interests and career aspirations.

Our mission is straightforward: To understand the environments (social, psychological, economic, designed, cultural) and relationships (individuals, families, groups) in which people live, and equally important, to help improve these environments and strengthen the relationships within them.

Browse through the graduate program options.  You will see that the faculty has national reputations in their field of study.   They conduct research and train students on issues that cross disciplinary lines.  They work closely – one-on-one -- with each graduate student to create a course of study that matches the students’ interests and career expectations.

The School of Human Ecology has a strong outreach tradition.  You will see that all faculty devote time and resources to service.  These efforts reflect the “Wisconsin Idea” – the idea that the university’s boundaries extend to those of the state and the nation.  Graduate training incorporates this mission by stressing the integration of research with policy development, program design and implementation, administration, and evaluation.

Funding opportunities include research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and scholarships.  Advanced Opportunity Fellowships (AOFs) are available for students from underrepresented groups.
