Outreach
What does it mean to be a public university in a democracy?
It means:
- Our teaching extends way beyond the borders of our campus and reflects the Wisconsin Idea.
- Our research is often conducted in the community and in collaboration with the public.
- We cannot feel satisfied until we have translated our promising discoveries into application.
The first few documents below describe some of our most interesting outreach projects.

Excellence in Outreach Award
The Outreach Planning Council invites Human Ecology faculty and staff to submit nominations for the Excellence in Outreach Award. Please consider your own outreach work for recognition as well as considering the work done by your colleagues. All faculty and staff with budgeted appointments in the School of Human Ecology are eligible. Outreach activities may represent the efforts of an individual faculty, academic staff, or classified staff member, or a group of these individuals. Deadline: Jun. 5, 2009. Call for Nominations.
Past Human Ecology and University Awards for Outreach
Last year, about one in every eight Human Ecology courses included Service Learning experiences as part of the curriculum. In these courses, the ideas in the books and the experiences in the field are brought together, which benefits both the students and the community.
The Meta Schroeder Beckner Homemaker Fund is a perpetual endowment to the School of Human Ecology. Part of this endowment is used to support Beckner grants, which are administered by the Outreach Planning Council.
