Admission to the Interior Design Major
Students who wish to pursue the Interior Design major begin in Phase I (pre-professional interior design course sequence) of the program. Advancement into Phase II (professional interior design course sequence) is competitive and involves an application process that occurs once a year, at the end of the fall semester. Applications will be mailed to eligible students in December of the second year in the program.
Students interested in Interior Design may enroll in the School of Human Ecology during the freshman year. Transfer students may take longer to complete their degree than students entering the program as freshmen, as they too must complete both Phase I and Phase II, which contain specialized courses that must be taken sequentially. Transfer students will need to have their records reviewed to determine whether prior course work may fulfill program requirements.
Admission is based on evaluation of a student's performance in Phase I of the curriculum. This includes a minimum of 18 credits from designated general university courses (see checksheet) and 15 credits of designated design-related courses. The following are the Phase I Design Core requirements.
- DS 120 Design Fundamentals I
- DS 220 Design Fundamentals II
- DS 221 Person & Environment Interactions
- ART 112 Drawing I
- ME 160 Architectural Graphics
The number of accepted students is limited by the number of available spaces in the Professional Sequence courses. Thus, the minimum GPA acceptable may vary from semester to semester, depending on the pool of applicants. Accepted students are required to register for DS 222 Interior Design I and other professional course sequence courses once they are accepted into Phase II. If an accepted students fails to register for DS 222, he/she will have to reapply for admission to Phase II.
Applications are evaluated by the Interior Design Faculty. All applicants will receive official notice of the outcome by mail in early January.
