Human Development & Family Studies
The Department of Human Development & Family Studies offers a Bachelor of Science degree in HUMAN DEVELOPMENT & FAMILY STUDIES (HDFS). Two options are available within the major: Child Development and Family Studies.
The Child Development option prepares students to pursue a range of careers involving work with young children and their families. The curriculum emphasizes the broad ecological contexts in which children develop, including family, school, community, and culture. Courses include life span human development, ecological contexts of development, intervention and assessment, social policy affecting children, research, and application of knowledge.
The Family Studies option provides opportunities to study family systems and human development across the lifespan, leading to careers in helping families and their members. Students learn about family relationships and how families handle routine as well as serious problems. They study aspects of families such as love and intimacy, work and money, and stress and violence.
