School of Human Ecology Honors Program
The School of Human Ecology Honors Program provides an opportunity for students to pursue course work in a greater depth than is possible in regular courses. Honors program members are eligible to enroll in courses that are offered for honors credit only, to participate in campus-wide activities for honors program students, and to apply for special research funding opportunities.
The honors program is a school-wide program open to all students, regardless of major. Completion of the honors program requirements results in an Honors Degree from the School of Human Ecology upon graduation. If a student does not obtain all the credits necessary for an Honors Degree, admission to the Honors Program will still be noted on the final transcript and all courses taken for honors credit will be so indicated.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
For Incoming Freshman:
- A high school grade point average of 3.3 or above OR a class ranking in the top ten percent
- A composite ACT score of 27 or above OR a combined SAT score of 1100 or above.
For Continuing Students:
- Students with a UW-Madison grade point average of 3.3 or above may be admitted to the Honors Program in any semester of their undergraduate career.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
To receive an Honors Degree from the School of Human Ecology, a student must:
- Be admitted to the Honors Program.
- Complete a minimum of 24 honors credits
- Complete at least 12 of those credits in Human Ecology coursework
- Maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average in all UW-Madison courses
- Receive a grade of B or better in a course to receive honors credit for that course
- Complete a senior honors thesis for at least 3, but no more than 6, senior honors thesis credits. REGISTERING FOR HONORS CREDITS
H = Honors credit is automatically assigned at the time a student adds a course designated as honors (H). This is a course or section for Honors students only, which offers more intensive, in-depth study. An honors course is also identified by an “8” as the middle digit of a three-digit course number under 700. Students who have been admitted to honors programs may enroll in these sections. High ability students who are not identified by the system as being in an honors program must have departmental permission to enroll.
! = Course is open to all qualified students and is recommended for those students planning an Honors Program. The enrollment system will prompt the student to make an honors selection. Honors candidates should register for honors credit.
% = Honors credit is available. The enrollment system will prompt the student to make an honors selection. Consult instructor. Independent work or Honors sections are organized after classes begin.
